The BASIS Soil and Water Management Certificate is an advanced professional qualification designed for advisers, agronomists, farm managers and others responsible for the practical management of soil and water resources within modern agriculture.

Combining tutor-led learning with practical exercises, field-based activities and group discussion, delegates will develop the knowledge required to manage soil and water in a way that maximises crop performance whilst protecting the wider environment. The course places a strong emphasis on sustainable farming practices, soil health, drainage, cultivation systems, nutrient management and environmental protection, enabling delegates to make informed management decisions that support both farm productivity and long-term environmental sustainability.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out in accordance with the BASIS Soil and Water Management Certificate requirements and consists of:

  • 20 multiple-choice questions (closed book).
  • Farm Management Plan (open book).
  • Two viva examinations conducted with a BASIS Examination Chair and a Soil Scientist.

Delegates must successfully complete all assessment components to achieve the qualification.


Certification

Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements, delegates will be awarded the BASIS Soil and Water Management Certificate.

This nationally recognised professional qualification demonstrates advanced knowledge of sustainable soil and water management and is also a compulsory module within the BASIS Diploma in Agronomy.


Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, BASIS advises that holding the FACTS qualification before commencing the course will be beneficial.

Delegates should also possess a sufficient understanding of spoken and written English to fully participate in training and complete the assessment programme.


Course Duration

The course is typically delivered over five to six days of formal training, followed by the BASIS assessment programme. Delivery combines classroom-based learning with practical exercises, field-based activities and group discussion, providing delegates with the knowledge and practical understanding required to successfully achieve the BASIS Soil and Water Management Certificate.
