Description

The Confined Space Safety Essentials eLearning course provides learners with an introductory understanding of confined spaces, the hazards that may be present and the basic safety principles required to help prevent accidents and incidents.

The course explores how confined spaces can be recognised, common hazards associated with these environments and the importance of appropriate risk controls, safe working procedures and emergency arrangements. It is designed to provide general awareness for employees who may work around confined spaces or need to understand the risks associated with confined space activities.

Who Should Attend?

  • Employees who work in environments where confined spaces may be present.
  • Maintenance and engineering personnel.
  • Utilities and infrastructure workers.
  • Agricultural and industrial employees.
  • Construction and site personnel.
  • Managers and supervisors responsible for areas containing confined spaces.
  • Anyone requiring general awareness of confined space hazards and safety precautions.

What You Will Learn

  • What is meant by a confined space.
  • Examples of confined spaces that may be encountered in the workplace.
  • How to recognise potential confined space environments.
  • Common hazards associated with confined spaces.
  • Risks associated with hazardous atmospheres and oxygen deficiency.
  • Physical and environmental hazards that may be present.
  • The importance of identifying hazards before work begins.
  • Basic principles of confined space risk assessment.
  • Control measures used to reduce confined space risks.
  • The importance of safe systems of work.
  • Roles and responsibilities associated with confined space safety.
  • The importance of preventing unauthorised entry.
  • Awareness of atmospheric testing and monitoring.
  • The role of appropriate equipment and personal protective equipment.
  • Communication and supervision considerations.
  • The importance of emergency and rescue arrangements.
  • Reporting confined space hazards and unsafe conditions.
  • Following organisational confined space procedures.

Course Delivery

This course is delivered as self-directed eLearning through the ELMO learning platform.

Learners can work through the course at their own pace and can move backwards and forwards through the learning content as required. The course does not need to be completed in one sitting, allowing learners to leave and return to their training where necessary.

Interactive activities may be included throughout the course to reinforce key learning points.

Assessment

Knowledge and understanding are checked through online assessment activities. Depending on the course content, these may include multiple-choice questions, matching exercises, drag-and-drop activities and image-based questions.

A minimum score of 70% is required to successfully complete the course.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course and assessment requirements, learners will receive a UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Accredited Certificate of Training.

This is an awareness-based eLearning course and does not provide the practical training or competence required to enter or work in a confined space. Individuals required to undertake confined space entry must receive appropriate additional training for their role, the level of risk and the activities they are expected to undertake.

Course Duration

The course is self-directed and learners can progress through the content at their own pace. Completion time may therefore vary depending on the individual learner.
