Description

The Counterbalance Forklift Conversion (Up to 5,000kg) B1 course provides certificated lift truck operators with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely convert their existing operator competence to the operation of a B1 Counterbalance Forklift (Up to 5,000kg), in accordance with current health and safety legislation, recognised industry best practice and the relevant AITT operator training standard.

Combining classroom-based learning with practical operator training, delegates will develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to understand the operational differences between truck categories, carry out pre-use inspections, safely manoeuvre the truck, lift, transport and place loads, and undertake routine operator checks whilst maintaining safe working practices.

Training is delivered in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training category, ensuring a structured, competence-based programme combining theoretical knowledge with practical workplace application.

Who Should Attend?

  • Operators who already hold a recognised lift truck operator certificate and require conversion training to the B1 Counterbalance Forklift (Up to 5,000kg) category.
  • Experienced lift truck operators changing to a different truck category within their workplace.
  • Employers introducing new truck types into their operation.
  • Operators required to extend their existing lift truck authorisation.

What You Will Learn

  • Relevant health and safety legislation and operator responsibilities.
  • Differences between previously operated lift truck categories and the B1 Counterbalance Forklift.
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment.
  • Truck design, controls and operating characteristics.
  • Selection and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Pre-use inspections and defect reporting.
  • Safe starting, manoeuvring and stopping procedures.
  • Load assessment and safe load handling techniques.
  • Stability principles and rated capacities.
  • Stacking, de-stacking and load placement.
  • Safe travelling with and without loads.
  • Routine operator maintenance and daily checks.

Practical Training

  • Carrying out pre-use inspections and functional checks.
  • Familiarisation with truck controls and operating characteristics.
  • Manoeuvring the truck safely in confined areas.
  • Lifting, transporting and placing loads.
  • Stacking and de-stacking exercises.
  • Applying safe operating techniques in realistic workplace scenarios.
  • Parking, shutdown and post-use inspections.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed throughout the course through practical observation and instructor questioning to confirm their knowledge, understanding and practical operating competence. Assessment is conducted against the relevant AITT operator training standard for the machine category being delivered.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course and associated assessment, delegates will receive an AITT Certificate of Basic Operator Training for the B1 Counterbalance Forklift (Up to 5,000kg) category.

Entry Requirements

Delegates must hold a current recognised operator certificate for another lift truck category and be able to demonstrate competent operating ability. Delegates should also possess a sufficient understanding of spoken and written English to fully participate in training and assessment.

Course Duration

Course duration will vary depending on the delegates' existing operator certification, previous experience, the machine category from which they are converting and the number of delegates attending. Conversion training is designed to build upon existing operator competence by focusing on the operational differences and specific skills required to safely operate the B1 Counterbalance Forklift (Up to 5,000kg) in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard.
