This course is designed for employees and other workers who require an understanding of how infections can spread within the workplace and the practical measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of transmission. The course introduces common causes of infection, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and prions, and considers how infectious agents may be transmitted between people and through the workplace environment. Learners explore the main routes of transmission, including direct and indirect contact, droplets and airborne transmission, together with factors that may increase an individual`s susceptibility to infection. The course considers practical infection prevention and control measures that can be applied within everyday workplace environments. These include effective hand hygiene, appropriate use of soap and water and alcohol-based hand rub, caring for the hands and skin, and maintaining appropriate standards of cleanliness for frequently touched surfaces, shared equipment and other workplace areas. Learners also consider respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette, appropriate actions when experiencing symptoms of an infectious illness and behaviours that can help reduce transmission in workplace and social settings. The course reinforces individual responsibility for following organisational infection control procedures and adopting good hygiene practices to help protect colleagues, clients, visitors and others from infection.
