Description
This course is designed for employees, managers and other individuals who wish to understand unconscious bias and develop practical approaches to reducing its influence within the workplace. The course introduces conscious and unconscious bias and considers how personal experiences, socialisation, assumptions and perceptions can influence attitudes and behaviour towards others. Learners explore common forms of unconscious bias, including in-group and out-group bias, confirmation bias, the halo effect, stereotyping, group attribution error and status-quo bias. Learners consider how bias can affect workplace morale, professional development opportunities, working relationships, recruitment and other decisions. The course explores practical approaches to addressing bias, including recognising personal biases, expanding interactions beyond familiar groups, making objective decisions based on relevant criteria and treating others equally and with respect. The course also considers creating more inclusive workplace interactions by encouraging participation, recognising the contributions of others and appropriately challenging biased behaviour. Learners are encouraged to reflect on their own decisions and behaviours and take deliberate action to prevent conscious or unconscious bias from unfairly influencing themselves or others.
