Description

This course is designed for care and support workers who require an understanding of the principles, responsibilities and safe working practices associated with managing medication for individuals in their care. The course introduces different types and classifications of medication, common forms of internal and external medication, medication terminology and the importance of following prescribed instructions. Learners consider individual rights, consent and independence in relation to medication, together with their own duty of care and responsibilities when supporting medication management. Learners explore medication records, Monitored Dosage Systems (MDS), appropriate storage and disposal, administration procedures and the management of PRN medication. The course introduces the Six R’s of medication administration: the right person, medication, dosage, time, route and documentation. It also considers medication refusal, side effects and the importance of following appropriate procedures when medication errors or adverse reactions occur. This eLearning course provides awareness and underpinning knowledge of medication management. It does not itself provide practical competency assessment or authorisation to administer medication; individuals must only undertake medication-related activities for which they have received appropriate training and are authorised in accordance with their role and organisational procedures.
