Description
This course is designed for managers, Human Resources personnel, selection panel members and other individuals who are involved in recruiting and selecting employees and require an understanding of fair, ethical and effective recruitment and selection practices. The course introduces the principles that underpin effective recruitment and selection, including integrity, impartiality, professional conduct, accountability, confidentiality, fairness and transparency. Learners explore merit-based selection and the importance of providing applicants with equal opportunities, establishing appropriate selection criteria, assessing individuals objectively against job requirements and maintaining recruitment decisions that can withstand scrutiny. Learners consider equality and discrimination within recruitment and the importance of avoiding inappropriate bias, patronage or favouritism. The course also considers reasonable adjustments for applicants with disabilities or other requirements and the importance of ensuring that recruitment and assessment arrangements do not unnecessarily disadvantage individuals. The course examines the roles and responsibilities of those involved in recruitment and selection, including the person responsible for authorising an appointment, the selection panel chair and individual panel members. Learners consider confidentiality, privacy, objectivity and the identification and management of actual or perceived conflicts of interest. Learners explore the recruitment process from preparation of the position description and identification of responsibilities and selection criteria through to advertising, reviewing applications and shortlisting. The course reinforces the importance of timely recruitment processes, consistent assessment criteria and appropriately documenting decisions. The course provides detailed guidance on preparing for and conducting interviews, including straightforward, behavioural and situational questioning techniques. Learners consider appropriate interview preparation, establishing rapport, asking relevant questions, allowing applicants sufficient opportunity to respond, clarifying information and appropriately closing the interview. Alternative assessment methods are also introduced, including presentations, psychometric testing, assessment centres and role-play exercises. Learners then consider how applicants are assessed against established selection criteria, how assessment outcomes and recommendations are recorded and how preferred candidates are identified. The course covers reference checking, including selecting appropriate referees, verifying information and using reference information to support final selection decisions. Finally, the course examines final approval and appointment processes, including making verbal and written offers, agreeing commencement arrangements and notifying unsuccessful applicants appropriately. Learners also consider the importance of maintaining accurate records and a clear audit trail throughout the recruitment and selection process. Overall, the course aims to equip those involved in recruitment with the knowledge required to contribute to a fair, consistent, transparent and effective process from initial recruitment planning through to final appointment.
