Description
This course is designed for individuals working in healthcare environments who use sharps or may be exposed to sharps and require an understanding of the precautions necessary to reduce the risk of injury and infection. The course introduces different types of sharps and the risks associated with their use, handling and disposal. Learners consider relevant workplace responsibilities and legislation, including the Health and Safety (Sharp Instruments in Healthcare) Regulations 2013, and explore how risk assessment and appropriate control measures can be applied to sharps safety. Learners develop an understanding of safe handling practices, appropriate personal protective equipment, sharps waste containers and the safe disposal and reprocessing of sharps where applicable. The course also considers hazard and incident reporting and the immediate actions required following a needlestick or other sharps injury. Overall, the course aims to provide learners with the knowledge required to work safely around sharps, reduce the risk of injury and infection and respond appropriately where a sharps-related incident occurs.
