The Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) Conversion J3 course is designed for operators who already hold recognised operator certification for another appropriate lift truck category and require conversion training to safely operate a J3 Telescopic Handler (Telehandler).

Combining classroom-based learning with practical operator training, delegates will build upon their existing operating competence while developing an understanding of the specific characteristics, controls and hazards associated with telescopic handlers. Particular emphasis is placed on stability, load charts, boom extension and elevation, ground conditions and the safe lifting, transporting and placement of loads.

Training is delivered in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard, ensuring a structured, competence-based programme focusing on the additional knowledge and practical skills required when converting to the J3 category.

Practical Training

• Carrying out pre-use inspections and functional checks.
• Familiarisation with telescopic handler controls and operating characteristics.
• Starting, stopping and manoeuvring safely.
• Assessing ground conditions and operating hazards.
• Travelling safely with and without loads.
• Correct use of the telescopic boom.
• Interpreting and applying machine load information during practical operation.
• Picking up, transporting and placing loads.
• Placing and retrieving loads at appropriate heights and reaches.
• Applying safe operating techniques in realistic workplace scenarios.
• Parking, shutdown and post-use procedures.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed through theoretical knowledge testing and practical operator assessment to confirm that they have achieved the additional knowledge, understanding and practical competence required to safely operate a J3 Telescopic Handler.

Assessment is conducted in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the conversion training and associated assessment, delegates will receive an AITT Certificate of Basic Operator Training for the J3 Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) category.

Entry Requirements

Delegates must hold a current recognised operator certificate for an appropriate lift truck category from which conversion to the J3 Telescopic Handler can be undertaken.

The delegate's existing certification and operating experience should be confirmed prior to training to establish that a conversion programme is appropriate. Where suitable previous training and certification cannot be evidenced, a Novice or Experienced Operator programme may be required instead.

Course Duration

Conversion training builds upon existing operator knowledge and competence and is therefore normally shorter than a full novice programme. Course duration will vary depending on the category from which the delegate is converting, the number of delegates attending and any additional training needs identified.

Training duration and delegate ratios will be determined in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard, with sufficient time allowed to cover the differences between categories and complete the required theoretical and practical training and assessment.
