Description
The Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) Experienced Operator J3 course is designed for operators who already have practical experience of operating a J3 Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) but have not previously completed formal recognised operator training or do not hold recognised operator certification.
Combining classroom-based learning with practical operator training, delegates will develop and formalise their existing knowledge and operating skills, covering telescopic handler safety, operator responsibilities, stability principles, load charts, ground conditions, boom operation and load handling. Existing operating techniques will be reviewed, with training provided to address any gaps in knowledge or unsafe practices identified.
Training is delivered in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard, ensuring a structured, competence-based programme combining theoretical knowledge with practical workplace application.
Who Should Attend?
- Experienced J3 Telescopic Handler operators who have not previously completed recognised operator training.
- Operators with practical workplace experience but no recognised operator certificate.
- Self-taught operators requiring formal training and certification.
- Operators whose existing experience can be demonstrated but who require training and assessment in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard.
What You Will Learn
- Relevant health and safety legislation and operator responsibilities.
- Hazard identification and safe systems of work.
- Principles and operating characteristics of telescopic handlers.
- Machine components, controls and operating functions.
- Pre-use inspections and defect reporting.
- Stability principles and rated capacities.
- Load centres and interpretation of load charts.
- Effects of boom extension and elevation on capacity and stability.
- Load assessment and safe load handling.
- Assessment of ground conditions and operating areas.
- Safe starting, manoeuvring and stopping procedures.
- Safe travelling with and without loads.
- Safe use of the telescopic boom.
- Operating on slopes and uneven terrain where appropriate.
- Lifting, transporting and accurately placing loads.
- Safe positioning and retrieval of loads at height and reach.
- Identification and correction of unsafe operating practices.
- Parking, shutdown and securing procedures.
- Routine operator maintenance and daily checks.
Practical Training
- Carrying out pre-use inspections and functional checks.
- Demonstrating safe and effective use of machine controls.
- Starting, stopping and manoeuvring safely.
- Manoeuvring forwards and in reverse.
- Assessing ground conditions and operating hazards.
- Travelling safely with and without loads.
- Correct use of the telescopic boom.
- Interpreting and applying machine load information during practical operation.
- Picking up, transporting and placing loads.
- Placing and retrieving loads at appropriate heights and reaches.
- Reviewing and correcting existing operating techniques where required.
- Applying safe operating techniques in realistic workplace scenarios.
- Parking, shutdown and post-use procedures.
Assessment
Delegates are assessed through theoretical knowledge testing and practical operator assessment to confirm that they have achieved the knowledge, understanding and practical competence required to safely operate a J3 Telescopic Handler.
Assessment is conducted in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the experienced operator training and associated assessment, delegates will receive an AITT Certificate of Basic Operator Training for the J3 Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) category.
Entry Requirements
Delegates must have sufficient previous practical experience of operating a J3 Telescopic Handler to undertake an experienced operator programme. This course is intended for operators who have developed practical operating experience but have not previously completed recognised formal operator training or do not hold recognised operator certification.
Where a delegate does not have sufficient previous operating experience, the Novice programme will be required.
Course Duration
Experienced operator training recognises delegates' existing practical operating experience and is therefore normally shorter than a full novice programme. Course duration will vary depending on the number of delegates attending, their previous operating experience and any additional training needs identified.
Training duration and delegate ratios will be determined in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard, with sufficient time allowed to address any gaps in knowledge or practical competence and to complete the required theoretical and practical assessment.
