Description

The Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) Refresher J3 course is designed for previously trained and certificated operators who require periodic refresher training to maintain and update their knowledge, practical skills and safe operating practices when using a J3 Telescopic Handler (Telehandler).

Combining classroom-based learning with practical operator training, delegates will revisit key safety principles, pre-use inspections, stability and load handling, safe manoeuvring, use of the telescopic boom and safe load placement. The course provides an opportunity to identify and correct unsafe practices or operating habits that may have developed since previous training.

Training is delivered in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard, ensuring a structured, competence-based programme combining theoretical knowledge with practical workplace application.

Who Should Attend?

  • Previously trained and certificated J3 Telescopic Handler operators requiring refresher training.
  • Operators whose employer requires periodic refresher training or reassessment.
  • Operators returning to telescopic handler operation following a period away from regular use.
  • Operators requiring their knowledge and practical operating skills to be updated and reassessed.

What You Will Learn

  • Current health and safety requirements and operator responsibilities.
  • Hazard identification and safe systems of work.
  • Pre-use inspections and defect reporting.
  • Machine controls and operating characteristics.
  • Stability principles and rated capacities.
  • Load centres and interpretation of load charts.
  • Factors affecting machine stability with the boom extended or elevated.
  • Load assessment and safe load handling.
  • Safe use of the telescopic boom.
  • Safe travelling with and without loads.
  • Safe manoeuvring and observation techniques.
  • Assessment of ground conditions and operating areas.
  • Operating on slopes and uneven terrain where appropriate.
  • Lifting, transporting and accurately placing loads.
  • Identification and correction of unsafe operating practices.
  • Parking, shutdown and securing procedures.
  • Routine operator maintenance and daily checks.

Practical Training

  • Carrying out pre-use inspections and functional checks.
  • Demonstrating safe starting and stopping procedures.
  • Manoeuvring safely forwards and in reverse.
  • Travelling safely with and without loads.
  • Assessing ground conditions and operating hazards.
  • Correct use of the telescopic boom.
  • Picking up, transporting and placing loads.
  • Placing and retrieving loads at appropriate heights and reaches.
  • Demonstrating accurate and controlled load handling.
  • Correcting any unsafe operating techniques identified during training.
  • Parking, shutdown and post-use procedures.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed through theoretical knowledge testing and practical operator assessment to confirm that they continue to demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and practical competence required to safely operate a J3 Telescopic Handler.

Assessment is conducted in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the refresher training and associated assessment, delegates will receive an AITT Certificate of Basic Operator Training for the J3 Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) category.

Entry Requirements

Delegates must have previously completed recognised operator training and hold, or be able to provide evidence of, previous certification for the J3 Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) category.

Where previous certification cannot be evidenced, an Experienced Operator programme may be more appropriate.

Course Duration

Refresher training is shorter than an initial novice programme and is intended for previously trained and certificated operators. Course duration will vary depending on the number of delegates attending, their existing competence and any additional training needs identified.

Training duration and delegate ratios will be determined in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard, with sufficient time allowed for theoretical and practical training and assessment.
