Description

The Confined Spaces - Medium Risk course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely enter and work within medium-risk confined spaces in accordance with current industry best practice and relevant health and safety legislation.

Combining classroom-based learning with realistic practical exercises, delegates will develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to identify confined space hazards, implement safe systems of work, use appropriate access and escape procedures, carry out atmospheric monitoring, and respond appropriately to foreseeable emergencies whilst working in medium-risk confined spaces.

Training is delivered in line with the UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Course Standard, ensuring a structured, competence-based approach that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application in realistic working conditions. Practical exercises are delivered using representative confined space equipment and simulated working environments designed to reflect real workplace scenarios.

Who Should Attend?

  • Personnel required to enter and work within medium-risk confined spaces.
  • Water, utilities and drainage operatives.
  • Construction and civil engineering personnel.
  • Industrial maintenance and engineering operatives.
  • Facilities management and infrastructure maintenance personnel.
  • Employers seeking to improve workforce competence and confined space safety.

What You Will Learn

  • Relevant health and safety legislation and operator responsibilities.
  • Identifying confined spaces and associated hazards.
  • Risk assessment and safe systems of work.
  • Permit-to-work procedures.
  • Atmospheric hazards and gas monitoring.
  • Ventilation requirements and atmospheric testing.
  • Selection and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Safe access, egress and working procedures.
  • Emergency arrangements and self-rescue principles.
  • Effective communication whilst working in confined spaces.
  • Equipment inspection and pre-use checks.

Practical Training

  • Carrying out confined space risk assessments.
  • Completing pre-entry safety checks.
  • Using atmospheric monitoring equipment.
  • Correct use of confined space PPE and safety equipment.
  • Safe entry, working and exit procedures.
  • Maintaining effective communication during confined space operations.
  • Responding to simulated emergency situations.
  • Safe completion of work and post-operation equipment checks.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed throughout the course by practical observation and instructor questioning to confirm their knowledge, understanding and practical competence. Assessment is conducted against the learning outcomes and assessment criteria specified within the relevant UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Course Standard.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Accredited Certificate, demonstrating that they have successfully achieved the learning outcomes and assessment criteria specified within the relevant UKRS Course Standard.

This course is intended for personnel working in medium-risk confined spaces. Employers remain responsible for ensuring that delegates receive site-specific instruction, suitable equipment and appropriate emergency arrangements for their workplace.

Entry Requirements

Delegates should be physically capable of safely undertaking confined space work and possess a sufficient understanding of spoken and written English to fully participate in training and assessment. Suitable medical fitness should be considered by both the delegate and employer where confined space entry forms part of normal work activities.

Course Duration

Course duration will vary depending on delegates' previous experience, the number of delegates attending and the level of competence to be achieved. Training is tailored to individual requirements and may be delivered for novice entrants, experienced personnel or as refresher training.
