Description

This course is designed for employees whose work may expose their hands and lower arms to workplace hazards and who require an understanding of common causes of hand injury and the precautions that can be taken to reduce associated risks. The course introduces common hand injuries and workplace hazards, including moving and rotating machinery, pinch points, hand tools, electricity, hazardous manual tasks, hand-arm vibration, hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures and biological or infectious agents. It considers the hierarchy of controls and practical measures for eliminating or reducing exposure to these hazards. The course also considers the selection and safe use of gloves and other personal protective equipment, including situations where gloves may themselves introduce a hazard around rotating machinery. Learners consider safe working practices, equipment checks, hazard and incident reporting, recognition of hand-arm vibration symptoms and appropriate action following a hand injury or workplace incident.
