Description

This course is designed for individuals who have been appointed or elected as Health and Safety Representatives and require an introductory understanding of their role, functions, responsibilities and powers in representing workers on workplace health and safety matters. The course introduces the legislative context of the Health and Safety Representative role and considers consultation between employers and workers on matters such as hazard identification, risk assessment, workplace changes and health and safety arrangements. It explores the functions and powers of representatives, including workplace inspections, investigating hazards and safety concerns, making representations to employers, accessing relevant health and safety information and seeking additional assistance where required. The course also considers training arrangements for Health and Safety Representatives, participation in regulatory inspections, appropriate action where serious or imminent danger is identified and the role of representatives in requesting or contributing to Health and Safety Committees. Learners consider the importance of consultation, confidentiality, appropriate escalation and working within the limits of their representative role. This eLearning course provides an overview of the Health and Safety Representative role only. It is not an approved training course under the Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1977 and does not replace any formal or role-specific training required for a Health and Safety Representative.
