Description

This course is designed for individuals who wish to develop their understanding of effective communication and improve their ability to communicate clearly and appropriately in workplace and everyday situations. The course explores the communication process, including the roles of the sender, receiver, communication channel and potential sources of noise or interference. It examines different communication styles, including assertive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, submissive and manipulative communication, and considers how behaviour, language and non-verbal cues can influence how a message is received and interpreted. Learners are introduced to written, verbal and non-verbal communication and the advantages, limitations and appropriate use of different communication channels. The course also considers common barriers to effective communication, including language, psychological, systematic, accessibility, attitudinal and physical barriers, and how these may affect understanding. The course develops practical communication skills through consideration of the 7Cs of effective communication, appropriate use of tone, pitch, pace and volume, body language and facial expressions, open and closed questioning, active listening and methods of checking understanding. Learners are encouraged to consider their own communication style and how communication may be adapted to suit the audience, situation and intended message. This eLearning course provides underpinning knowledge and awareness of effective communication principles and does not constitute a regulated communication, management or professional qualification.
