Description

This course is designed for workers who undertake or may be exposed to manual handling activities and require an awareness of the associated hazards, risks and safe working principles. The course introduces manual handling activities, including lifting, carrying, lowering, pushing and pulling, and considers the types of musculoskeletal injury that may result from unsafe or poorly managed handling activities. Learners explore factors that can increase the risk of injury, including the characteristics of the load, the nature of the task, the working environment and individual worker factors. Learners consider responsibilities for manual handling safety and the principles of hazard identification, risk assessment and risk reduction. The course explores measures including avoiding unnecessary manual handling, using appropriate handling aids, planning activities, improving the working environment and seeking assistance where required. The course also introduces safe lifting and carrying principles, team lifting, safe storage, working posture and measures for reducing risks associated with repetitive work and vibration. This eLearning course provides awareness and underpinning knowledge of manual handling safety and does not replace task-specific instruction, practical training or competency assessment where these are required.
