Description
This course is designed for individuals working in or around mining operations who require an awareness of the common health and safety hazards, responsibilities and emergency arrangements associated with mining environments. The course introduces individual and organisational health and safety responsibilities, including fitness for work, following safety instructions and procedures, reporting hazards and contributing to effective hazard and risk management. Learners consider the principles of identifying hazards, assessing risks, implementing appropriate controls, recording significant findings and reviewing the effectiveness of control measures. Learners explore common mining hazards, including airborne contaminants, dust and fumes, heat and cold stress, hazardous substances and electrical hazards. The course considers appropriate precautions, including the use of personal and respiratory protective equipment, good hygiene practices, safe handling of hazardous substances and following established workplace safety procedures. The course also develops awareness of incident reporting and emergency arrangements within mining environments, including reportable incidents under RIDDOR and potential emergencies such as fire, falls of ground, inundation or inrush, loss of access or egress, power failure and communication system failure. Learners consider the importance of understanding and following site-specific emergency plans, alarms, evacuation arrangements and instructions. This eLearning course provides general mining health and safety awareness and does not replace site-specific induction, task-specific training, practical instruction or competency assessment where these are required.
