Description

This course is designed for individuals who are members of, or contribute to, a workplace Health and Safety Committee (HSC) and require an understanding of the committee’s role, functions and responsibilities in supporting effective workplace health and safety arrangements. The course introduces the composition and functions of Health and Safety Committees and considers the responsibilities and rights of committee members, including worker representation, participation in meetings and access to relevant workplace health and safety information. It explores effective committee practices, including establishing priorities, setting achievable goals, preparing meeting agendas, recording minutes, allocating actions and monitoring progress. The course also considers the committee’s role in developing health and safety standards, rules and procedures, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and participating in workplace inspections and hazard identification activities. Learners consider the role and powers of inspectors from regulatory bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), appropriate conduct during regulatory visits and the escalation of health and safety matters that cannot be resolved through the committee.
