The PA6AW: Pesticides Hydraulic Nozzle Application to Water course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely apply pesticides to or near water using pedestrian handheld applicators fitted with hydraulic nozzles or rotary atomisers.

The course prepares learners for the PA6AW assessment (Unit 266) within the City & Guilds Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Handheld Equipment (PA6) – 0216-78. The official NPTC unit title is Operating pedestrian handheld applicators fitted with hydraulic nozzles or rotary atomisers to apply pesticides to or near water (PA6AW).

What You Will Learn

• Legislative, regulatory and industry requirements relating to pesticide application to or near water.
• Identifying and reducing environmental risks associated with filling and application sites.
• Preparing handheld application equipment and carrying out appropriate pre-use checks.
• Selecting suitable nozzles and operating pressures for the intended application.
• Calibrating the applicator accurately.
• Measuring and calculating the area to be treated.
• Calculating and measuring the required quantities of pesticide and water.
• Filling the applicator safely while reducing risks to the operator and aquatic environment.
• Applying pesticides safely and accurately to or near water.
• Managing surplus pesticide and cleaning, decontaminating and storing application equipment appropriately.
• The practical skills and knowledge required in preparation for the City & Guilds NPTC PA6AW assessment.

Course Delivery

This course is delivered through face-to-face theory and practical training.

Learners will undertake practical activities using appropriate pedestrian handheld pesticide application equipment to develop the knowledge and skills required for application to or near water and prepare for the separate City & Guilds NPTC PA6AW assessment.

Assessment

The training course itself does not provide the City & Guilds NPTC qualification.

Following the training, learners must successfully complete Unit 266 – Operating pedestrian handheld applicators fitted with hydraulic nozzles or rotary atomisers to apply pesticides to or near water (PA6AW) within the City & Guilds Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Handheld Equipment (PA6) – 0216-78.

The assessment is arranged separately through UK Rural Skills Ltd, an approved City & Guilds testing centre (Centre Number: 075034) and is subject to an additional assessment fee.

The NPTC assessment does not take place on the same day as the training. Once the assessment application and payment have been received, an assessor will contact the candidate to arrange the assessment for a separate date. Assessor availability can vary, so candidates are encouraged to submit their application and payment as early as possible.

Certification

Successful completion of the required NPTC assessment contributes to the City & Guilds Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Handheld Equipment (PA6) – 0216-78, covering application to or near water (PA6AW).

The current NPTC qualification structure requires PA6A (Unit 265) to have been achieved before assessment for PA6AW (Unit 266).

Completion of the training course alone does not constitute achievement of the City & Guilds NPTC qualification.

Entry Requirements

Learners must hold the appropriate PA1 qualification before undertaking the PA6 assessment route.

Learners must also have achieved PA6A – Operating pedestrian handheld applicators fitted with hydraulic nozzles or rotary atomisers to apply pesticides to land (Unit 265) before undertaking the PA6AW assessment. This is a specific requirement of the current NPTC qualification structure.

Learners must be able to participate safely in the practical elements of the training.

Course Duration

Typically 1 day, although training duration may vary depending on learner experience and numbers.

The City & Guilds NPTC PA6AW assessment is separate from the training and will take place on a separately arranged date.
