The Portable Appliance (PAT) Testing course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to inspect and test portable electrical appliances in accordance with current legislation, recognised industry guidance and best practice.

Combining classroom-based learning with extensive practical training, delegates will develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to carry out visual inspections, perform electrical safety tests, correctly interpret test results, maintain accurate records and identify appliances that are safe for continued use or require further attention. The course promotes safe inspection and testing practices whilst helping organisations meet their responsibilities for maintaining electrical equipment.

Training is delivered in line with the UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Course Standard, ensuring a structured, competence-based approach that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application in realistic workplace environments.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed throughout the course through practical observation and instructor questioning to confirm their knowledge, understanding and practical competence. Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Accredited Certificate, demonstrating that they have successfully achieved the learning outcomes and assessment criteria specified within the relevant UKRS Course Standard.

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to undertake portable appliance inspection and testing. Employers remain responsible for determining the competence of individuals carrying out testing and for maintaining appropriate inspection and testing regimes in accordance with current legislation and recognised guidance.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Delegates should possess basic literacy and numeracy skills, a sufficient understanding of spoken and written English to fully participate in training and assessment, and be capable of safely undertaking practical electrical inspection and testing activities.

Course Duration

Course duration will vary depending on delegates' previous experience, the number of delegates attending and the range of electrical appliances being inspected and tested. Training is tailored to individual requirements and may be delivered for novice operators, experienced personnel or as refresher training.
