This course is designed for individuals working in retail environments who require an understanding of shoplifting, retail theft and the measures they can take to help prevent and respond safely to theft-related incidents. The course introduces retail loss and the different forms shoplifting may take, including theft of goods, consumption without payment, price manipulation and fraudulent returns. Learners explore commonly targeted products, behaviours and tactics that may indicate an increased risk of shoplifting and the importance of avoiding assumptions when observing customers. Learners consider how attentive customer service and appropriate workplace practices can help deter theft. The course also examines how to respond safely where shoplifting is witnessed, including following organisational procedures, alerting management or security and avoiding confrontation, pursuit or any action that could place themselves or others at risk. Overall, the course aims to provide retail workers with the knowledge required to recognise potential theft-related risks, help deter shoplifting and respond safely and appropriately to shoplifting and suspected fraudulent returns.
