Description

The Load Restraint eLearning course provides learners with an understanding of the principles of safely securing loads carried on vehicles and the risks associated with inadequately restrained or unstable loads.

The course explores how loads can move during transport and how factors such as acceleration, braking, cornering and road conditions can affect load stability. Learners will consider the importance of planning, positioning and restraining loads appropriately, inspecting restraint equipment and carrying out suitable checks before and during transport.

Who Should Attend?

  • Drivers transporting goods, materials or equipment.
  • Employees responsible for loading vehicles.
  • Transport and logistics personnel.
  • Warehouse and distribution employees involved in vehicle loading.
  • Employees responsible for securing or checking loads.
  • Managers and supervisors responsible for transport and loading activities.
  • Anyone requiring an understanding of load restraint and safe transport principles.

What You Will Learn

  • Understanding the importance of effective load restraint.
  • Recognising the risks associated with unsecured or inadequately restrained loads.
  • Understanding how load movement can affect vehicle stability and handling.
  • Recognising the forces acting on loads during transport.
  • Understanding the effects of acceleration, braking and cornering.
  • Considering how road and driving conditions may affect a load.
  • Understanding individual responsibilities for safe loading and load restraint.
  • Identifying the characteristics of a load before loading begins.
  • Considering the weight, dimensions and shape of a load.
  • Recognising loads that may be unstable or difficult to secure.
  • Planning the position and distribution of loads.
  • Understanding how load position can affect vehicle stability.
  • Avoiding inappropriate or uneven load distribution.
  • Understanding the importance of vehicle and equipment load limits.
  • Recognising the importance of an appropriate centre of gravity.
  • Understanding the principles of load restraint.
  • Recognising different methods of restraining loads.
  • Understanding the role of blocking and containment.
  • Awareness of appropriate restraint equipment and securing systems.
  • Selecting restraint equipment appropriate to the load and vehicle.
  • Understanding the importance of suitable anchorage points.
  • Inspecting restraint equipment before use.
  • Recognising worn, damaged or unsuitable restraint equipment.
  • Using restraint equipment in accordance with instructions and workplace procedures.
  • Protecting restraint equipment from damage caused by sharp edges where appropriate.
  • Recognising the potential for loads to settle or shift during transport.
  • Carrying out appropriate load security checks before beginning a journey.
  • Rechecking loads and restraints during transport where appropriate.
  • Recognising circumstances that may require additional checks.
  • Maintaining personal safety when securing and checking loads.
  • Recognising when a load should not be transported.
  • Reporting damaged equipment and load security concerns.
  • Following organisational loading and transport procedures.
  • Contributing to safe and effective load restraint practices.

Course Delivery

This course is delivered as self-directed eLearning through the ELMO learning platform.

Learners can work through the course at their own pace and can move backwards and forwards through the learning content as required. The course does not need to be completed in one sitting, allowing learners to leave and return to their training where necessary.

Interactive activities may be included throughout the course to reinforce key learning points.

Assessment

Knowledge and understanding are checked through online assessment activities. Depending on the course content, these may include multiple-choice questions, matching exercises, drag-and-drop activities and image-based questions.

A minimum score of 70% is required to successfully complete the course.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course and assessment requirements, learners will receive a UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Accredited Certificate of Training.

This is an awareness-based eLearning course and does not, on its own, demonstrate practical competence in loading vehicles or selecting, applying and inspecting load restraint systems. Employers must ensure workers receive appropriate vehicle-specific, load-specific and practical training and instruction for the transport activities they undertake.

Course Duration

The course is self-directed and learners can progress through the content at their own pace. Completion time may therefore vary depending on the individual learner.
