Description
The Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) Novice J3 course is designed for learners with little or no previous experience of operating a J3 Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) and provides the knowledge and practical skills required to operate the machine safely and competently.
Combining classroom-based learning with comprehensive practical operator training, delegates will develop an understanding of telescopic handler safety, operator responsibilities, stability principles, load charts, ground conditions and load handling, together with the practical skills required to carry out pre-use inspections, manoeuvre safely, operate the telescopic boom, lift, transport and place loads and complete routine operator checks.
Training is delivered in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard, ensuring a structured, competence-based programme combining theoretical knowledge with practical workplace application.

- Routine operator maintenance and daily checks.
Practical Training
- Carrying out pre-use inspections and functional checks.
- Familiarisation with machine controls and operating functions.
- Starting, stopping and manoeuvring safely.
- Manoeuvring forwards and in reverse.
- Assessing ground conditions and operating hazards.
- Travelling safely with and without loads.
- Correct use of the telescopic boom.
- Interpreting and applying machine load information during practical operation.
- Picking up, transporting and placing loads.
- Placing and retrieving loads at appropriate heights and reaches.
- Applying safe operating techniques in realistic workplace scenarios.
- Parking, shutdown and post-use procedures.
Assessment
Delegates are assessed through theoretical knowledge testing and practical operator assessment to confirm that they have achieved the knowledge, understanding and practical competence required to safely operate a J3 Telescopic Handler.
Assessment is conducted in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the novice training and associated assessment, delegates will receive an AITT Certificate of Basic Operator Training for the J3 Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) category.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal previous operator training or experience requirements for this course. The programme is specifically designed for individuals with little or no previous experience of operating a telescopic handler.
Delegates should be physically capable of safely operating the equipment and possess a sufficient understanding of spoken and written English to fully participate in training and assessment.
Course Duration
Novice training is the most comprehensive operator training programme and requires sufficient time for learners to develop the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical operating skills from an introductory level.
Course duration will vary depending on the number of delegates attending and their individual learning needs. Training duration and delegate ratios will be determined in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard, with sufficient time allowed for theoretical instruction, practical training and assessment.
