Description
The Counterbalance Forklift Novice (Up to 5,000kg) B1 course is designed for learners with little or no previous experience of operating a B1 Counterbalance Forklift and provides the knowledge and practical skills required to operate the truck safely and competently.
Combining classroom-based learning with comprehensive practical operator training, delegates will develop an understanding of lift truck safety, operator responsibilities, stability principles and load handling, together with the practical skills required to carry out pre-use inspections, manoeuvre safely, lift, transport, stack and de-stack loads and complete routine operator checks.
Training is delivered in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard, ensuring a structured, competence-based programme combining theoretical knowledge with practical workplace application.
Who Should Attend?
- Individuals with little or no previous experience of operating a B1 Counterbalance Forklift.
- New employees who will be required to operate a counterbalance forklift as part of their role.
- Employees moving into a role involving lift truck operation.
- Operators requiring full initial training and assessment for the B1 Counterbalance Forklift category.

- Steering, observation and manoeuvring in confined areas.
- Lifting, transporting and placing loads.
- Stacking and de-stacking techniques.
- Parking, shutdown and securing procedures.
- Routine operator maintenance and daily checks.
Practical Training
- Carrying out pre-use inspections and functional checks.
- Familiarisation with truck controls and operating functions.
- Starting, stopping and steering the truck safely.
- Manoeuvring forwards and in reverse.
- Operating safely within confined areas.
- Travelling safely with and without loads.
- Picking up, transporting and placing loads.
- Stacking and de-stacking loads at appropriate heights.
- Applying safe operating techniques in realistic workplace scenarios.
- Parking, shutdown and post-use procedures.
Assessment
Delegates are assessed through theoretical knowledge testing and practical operator assessment to confirm that they have achieved the knowledge, understanding and practical competence required to safely operate a B1 Counterbalance Forklift.
Assessment is conducted in accordance with the relevant AITT operator training standard.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the novice training and associated assessment, delegates will receive an AITT Certificate of Basic Operator Training for the B1 Counterbalance Forklift (Up to 5,000kg) category.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal previous operator training or experience requirements for this course. The programme is specifically designed for individuals with little or no previous experience of operating a counterbalance forklift.
Delegates should be physically capable of safely operating the equipment and possess a sufficient understanding of spoken and written English to fully participate in training and assessment.
Course Duration
Novice training is the most comprehensive operator training programme and requires sufficient time for learners to develop the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical operating skills from an introductory level.
