Description
The Tractor Driving (Young Persons Aged 13-16 Years) course provides young people with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate agricultural tractors under close supervision in accordance with current industry best practice and relevant health and safety legislation.
Combining classroom-based learning with closely supervised practical training, delegates will develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to carry out pre-use inspections, understand tractor controls, safely manoeuvre agricultural tractors in a controlled environment and undertake routine operator checks. The course promotes safe working practices, develops awareness of workplace hazards and provides a structured introduction to agricultural machinery operation appropriate to the age and experience of the learner.
Training is delivered in line with the UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Course Standard, ensuring a structured, competence-based programme that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application in realistic agricultural working conditions.

What You Will Learn

Practical Training
- Carrying out pre-use inspections and safety checks.
- Identifying tractor controls and operating functions.
- Safe starting and stopping procedures.
- Driving and manoeuvring within a controlled training environment.
- Basic reversing and positioning exercises.
- Carrying out routine operator maintenance and cleaning.
- Safe shutdown and parking procedures.
Assessment
Delegates are assessed throughout the course through practical observation and instructor questioning to confirm their knowledge, understanding and practical competence. Assessment is conducted against the learning outcomes and assessment criteria specified within the relevant UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Course Standard.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Accredited Certificate, demonstrating that they have successfully achieved the learning outcomes and assessment criteria specified within the relevant UKRS Course Standard.
Entry Requirements
Delegates must be aged between 13 and 16 years at the time of training. No previous tractor driving experience is required.
Delegates should be physically capable of safely participating in practical activities and possess a sufficient understanding of spoken and written English to fully participate in training and assessment.
Where delegates are under the age of 18, appropriate parental or guardian consent must be obtained prior to attendance. Training must be delivered under appropriate supervision, with safeguarding arrangements in place and in accordance with the UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Course Standard.
Course Duration
Course duration will vary depending on delegates' previous experience, the number of delegates attending and the level of competence to be achieved. Training is designed specifically for young people aged 13–16 years, providing a structured introduction to the safe operation of agricultural tractors through closely supervised practical instruction and age-appropriate learning activities.
