The Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Training course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely and confidently use an automated external defibrillator (AED) as part of an emergency response to sudden cardiac arrest.

Combining classroom-based learning with practical hands-on training, delegates will develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to recognise cardiac arrest, summon appropriate emergency assistance, perform effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and safely operate an AED whilst following current Resuscitation Council UK guidance.

Training is delivered in line with the UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Course Standard, ensuring a structured, competence-based approach that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application using realistic emergency scenarios.

Practical Training

• Assessing an unresponsive casualty.
• Performing effective adult CPR.
• Safe preparation and operation of an AED.
• Applying AED pads correctly.
• Delivering defibrillation safely following device prompts.
• Coordinating CPR and AED use within an emergency response.
• Practical emergency response scenarios using training equipment.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed throughout the course through practical observation and instructor questioning to confirm their knowledge, understanding and practical competence. Assessment is conducted against the learning outcomes and assessment criteria specified within the relevant UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Course Standard.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a UK Rural Skills (UKRS) Accredited Certificate, demonstrating that they have successfully achieved the learning outcomes and assessment criteria specified within the relevant UKRS Course Standard.

Please note: This course provides competence in the safe use of an automated external defibrillator and associated emergency response skills. It is not an Ofqual-regulated first aid qualification unless specifically stated.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Delegates should be physically capable of carrying out practical CPR exercises and possess a sufficient understanding of spoken and written English to fully participate in training and assessment.

Course duration will vary depending on the number of delegates attending and organisational requirements. Training is tailored to individual requirements, ensuring sufficient time is provided to develop practical confidence in responding to cardiac arrest emergencies and the safe use of an automated external defibrillator.
