Description

This course is designed for employees working in adult social care who require an understanding of falls, associated risk factors and the measures that can be taken to reduce the likelihood and potential consequences of falls among people receiving care and support. The course introduces the nature and potential consequences of falls and explores common risk factors, including mobility and balance limitations, cognitive impairment, continence, footwear, medication, vision, dizziness and environmental hazards. It considers the principles of falls risk screening and assessment, personalised care planning and multifactorial approaches to falls prevention, together with practical measures for reducing identified risks. The course also considers appropriate observation and support, the use and limitations of restraints, measures for minimising injury and the actions required following a fall. Learners are introduced to post-fall assessment, reporting and documentation requirements and the importance of reviewing incidents to identify measures that may reduce the risk of recurrence.
