Description

This course is designed for healthcare workers and other individuals who are required to move or support patients, clients or residents and require an understanding of safe patient handling principles and practices. The course introduces the risks associated with patient handling, including musculoskeletal injuries, and considers the responsibilities of individuals and organisations for reducing these risks. Learners explore the importance of patient handling risk assessments, encouraging individuals to use their own mobility where possible and using appropriate mechanical equipment and handling aids. Learners consider common patient handling equipment, including hoists, sliding aids, sit-to-stand lifts and walkbelts, together with the importance of selecting appropriate equipment, preparing the environment and patient, obtaining sufficient assistance and following safe handling procedures. The course also considers additional precautions for bariatric patients and appropriate action following patient handling incidents or injuries. Overall, the course aims to provide learners with the knowledge required to reduce patient handling risks and support the safe, dignified and respectful movement of patients.
