Description

This course is designed for employees, supervisors and other individuals involved in planning or undertaking work activities who require an understanding of safe work planning processes used to identify and control hazards before work begins. The course introduces Method Statements and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), including their purpose, when they should be completed and the responsibilities of those involved in preparing, reviewing and following them. Learners consider how work activities can be broken down into logical steps so that associated hazards and appropriate control measures can be identified. Learners explore common workplace hazard categories and the hierarchy of controls, including elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment. The course also considers how consequence and likelihood can be assessed using a risk matrix to determine whether planned work can proceed safely. The course reinforces the importance of carrying out work in accordance with the relevant Method Statement or JSA, stopping work where identified methods or controls are unsuitable or unsafe, reporting concerns and maintaining appropriate records. Overall, the course aims to provide learners with the knowledge required to contribute effectively to safe work planning and help ensure hazards and risks are appropriately identified and controlled before and during work activities.
