Description
This course is designed for managers, supervisors and team leaders who are responsible for managing employee performance and require an understanding of effective performance management processes within the workplace. The course introduces the objectives and benefits of performance management and examines the manager’s responsibilities for communicating organisational objectives, establishing clear expectations, monitoring performance and providing appropriate guidance, support and development opportunities. It considers how effective performance management contributes to workforce and succession planning, employee development, staff retention and organisational performance. Learners explore both formal and informal performance management activities, including establishing development plans, agreeing performance criteria, monitoring progress, identifying training and development needs and providing appropriate development opportunities. The course also considers mentoring as a means of supporting employee development and examines the manager’s responsibilities for maintaining effective mentoring relationships. The course develops understanding of effective feedback and performance evaluation, including positive and constructive feedback, objective assessment against agreed targets and standards, probationary and ongoing performance reviews, and the importance of avoiding common evaluation errors or bias. Learners also consider appropriate documentation and record keeping to support fair, consistent and evidence-based performance management decisions. Finally, the course examines the management of unsatisfactory behaviour and performance, including the distinction between conduct and capability issues and the importance of following fair and appropriate processes. Learners are introduced to progressive disciplinary and capability procedures, improvement measures, formal warnings and circumstances in which further formal action may be required, while recognising the importance of following organisational procedures and obtaining appropriate HR support.
